A while ago, I saw a YouTube posting, done by a Pastor at a local church. It was an installment of a series of Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart.
I have been trying to come to terms with this.
A hypocrite is someone that gives in to hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is the assumption or postulation of moral standards, principles, etc. to which one’s own behavior does not conform; pretense.
So, the Pastor was telling “everyone” to know this verse but, since he didn’t know it (his eyes kept shifting down to read it), I can only guess that he doesn’t consider himself part of the “everyone” group. I watched it a number of times, trying to convince myself that he was just possibly nervous or not wanting to look at the camera but his eyes kept shifting down to the same place, to read the scripture quote. I couldn’t deny that this Pastor was reading the verse he thought everyone should know by heart.
This both frustrates and saddens me deeply. I don’t want to call this Pastor a hypocrite but I don’t know of another term.
I’m going to put myself into the shoes of a non-Christian – this is somewhat easy since that was just a short time ago. As a non-Christian watching the YouTube video from a Pastor telling others to know a verse by heart that the Pastor obviously doesn’t know, that would just give the non-Christian yet another reason to dislike organized religion and turn from God.
I do fully believe that if God has elected someone prior to time, that person will be converted, no doubt about it. It would just make it a bit easier on the non-believer to not see such blatant hypocricy in the church.
